Various Artists Planet Latino sampler |

| Following the release of the rather splendid 'Planet Latino' compilation at the tail-end of last year, we have been innundated with requests to release some of the tracks on vinyl. Never ones to turn down the opportunity to liberate music from the digital format, we though it best to keep our DJs happy and cram four of the most dancefloor friendly tracks onto one rather natty looking bit of vinyl. Intended as a tribute to the output of great Latin music of the 1970s, the artwork replicates that of that of the seminal label of the time, Fania. Kicking things off, Snowboy gives us his lush reworking of Negrocan's 'Mare Baixa' taking the bull by the horns and taking it straight to the dancefloor. Scotland's Rumba Caliente make their vinyl debut and prove Latin music now transends borders with their heavy hitting salsa dura, descarga and mambo. Taking their name from a fiery Tipica 73 track, the band tear up this Latin jazz monster as if they were from Spanish Harlem not Leith! Over on the flip, Stones Throw's Aloe Blacc takes John Legend's anthemic 'Ordinary People' and translates it into a hispanic hip-shaker, weaving in parts of Stevie Wonder along the way. Finishing the 12'' off is a tearing drum and bass remix of Manteca, by Freestyle's very own Flow Dynamics, under a different name. Already caned by the likes of Quantic and DJ Marky, this should be tearing it up and burning it down on a dancefloor near you soon. |
